2004 Annual Wing Chun/ Ving Tsun/ Wing Tsun Gathering
Chaparral Park, Scottsdale, AZ
The first annual Wing Chun/ Ving Tsun/ Wing Tsun Gathering was held this year at Chaparral Park in Scottsdale, Arizona. Hosted by Dai-Sifu Don Grose and attended by a variety of WC/ VT/ WT families from around the state, this was a good example of various lineages coming together in friendship and brotherhood.
In attendance at this ground-breaking event were members of:
Arizona Wing Chun Association
Tucson Ving Tsun Academy/ International Ving Tsun Kung Fu Federation (IVTKFF)
Master Leung Ting's International WingTsun Association
Meng's Martial Arts of Arizona
Wing Chun Kuen Alliance
Sifu Joy Chadhuri's Arizona Wing Chun
The Gathering began with Dai-Sifu Don Grose welcoming the attendants and discussing various avenues for community service. We then began discussing and demonstrating the diversity of our styles through demonstrations of Siu-Nim-Tau and Chi-sau. It's interesting to note that even though no formal "rules" were established as to what would be taking place, everyone was very open to just going with things and taking it as it came.
Personally, I got my first look at Hung Fa Yi Wing Chun through Sifu Savi Kruich's excellent demonstrations and descriptions of what the style is about and how they train. I've only "heard" of Hung Fa Yi and have never had the priviledge of experiencing it first-hand, so it was great fun getting to see something brand new to me.

In addition to the various groups demonstrating their respective Siu-Nim-Tau forms, there was also a great deal of training in chi-sau and how the concepts are related from lineage-to-lineage, as well as school-to-school.
This was a great training and information day for all of us, and the AWCA expresses a sincere thank you to all participants for demonstrating your styles with openness and friendship. Our families continue to grow closer and it's a privilege to participate in sharing our common knowledge. We've all learned that even with the differences between our methods, the similarities far outweigh them.
See you next year! |
